Milan is a fine city whose name is one that always features in one’s holiday list. Castello Sforzesco was once a fine castle housing the Duchy of Milan. Today it has been converted into a number of museums. This magnificent citadel holds great importance in Europe’s history. It was saved from being demolished in the 20th century. That is the time when it was converted into a number of museums.

The castle itself is a sight to behold. It features three inner courtyards and has a square plan with dominating towers. The main entrance of the castle takes you right to the Piazza d’Armi, an expansive inner courtyard. The other two courtyards are enclosed by the palatial residences. The Cortile della Rocchetta, one of the smaller inner courtyards features a large number of frescoes and three arcades, designed by three different architects.

The Corte Ducale, the inner courtyard which lies to the right of the residences, features a beautiful loggia, the Loggetta di Galeazzo Maria. Its design has renaissance elements in it. It too features several frescoes. It even has one by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Today the castle houses a number of museums and is therefore called the Musei Civici. The Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco is the most important out of these museums. It features a marvelous art collection which showcase beauties like Michelangelo’s last sculpture, the Rondanini Pietà, Andrea Mantegna’s Trivulzio Madonna and Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Trivulzianus manuscript

The Museum of Musical Instruments and the Applied Arts Collection lies on the first and second floor of the Rocchetta house and features historic musical instruments such as a 16th century Venetian harpsichord, a glass harmonica and a Flemish double virginal as well as objects in gold, silver, glass, porcelain, ivory and wrought iron from the Middle Ages up to the 19th century.

The Egyptian and Prehistoric sections of the Archaeological Museum is situated in the basement floors around the Ducal Courtyard. The Museum of Ancient Art occupies the ground floor its exhibits include Italian paintings by painters like Andrea Mantegna’s Trivulzio Madonna, a 4th century sarcophagus and the 14th century Mausoleum of Bernabò Visconti. Besides these the museum also has the Achille Bertarelli Print Collection.

One of the most magnificent opera houses in Italy, La Scala accommodates La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet and La Scala Theatre Orchestra. 3 August 1778, is the day it was inaugurated with the premier performance of Antonio Salieri’s Europa riconosciuta. Most of the renowned operatic artists of Italy, as well as some of the finest singers of the world have at some point or the other performed here.

Besides the music, the architecture is breathtaking. The previous theatre, the Teatro Regio Ducale was destroyed by a fire and the La Scala was constructed in its place. Over a period of two years the theatre was completed by Pietro Marliani, Pietro Nosetti and Antonio and Giuseppe Fe. It has one of the largest stages in the whole of Italy and over 3,000 seats organized into 678 pit-stalls.

Recently the opera house was renovated by renowned architect Mario Botta. The new changes were not welcomed by the preservationists. They have however, improved the Opera’s quality threefold. Monitors for the electronic libretto system have been included in the seats that allow the audience to choose the language which they prefer. The entire sound system has been updated and the stage has been reconstructed as well.

7 December, Saint Ambrose’s Day, is when the La Scala season begins. Besides the performances, La Scala also features a museum called The Museo Teatrale alla Scala which displays paintings, drafts, statues, costumes, and other documents regarding La Scala’s and opera history in general. Accademia d’Arti e Mestieri dello Spettacolo or the Academy of Performing Arts is also organised by La Scala with the objective of encouraging new musicians with blossoming talents. The La Scala Theatre Academy is a school assosciated with La Scala and offeres trainging in the various arts of musical performances, which also includes stage craft and stage management.

The Meazza Stadium in Milan is commonly known as the San Siro because of its location. Standing in the San Siro district in Milan, Italy, this football stadium gets its name after Giuseppe Meazza, the two-time World Cup winner (1934, 1938) who played for Internazionale, and briefly for Milan, in the 1930s and 1940s.

The construction of the stadium commenced in 1925 under the idea of Piero Pirelli, the president of AC Milan who wanted to have a stadium in the same district as the horse racing track. The architects designed a private stadium only for football without the athletics tracks. First match was held in this stadium with 35, 000 spectators on September 19, 1926. In the match, Internazionale defeated Milan 6–3. In 1947 Internazionale became tenants and now it shares ground with Milan. Also, the Italian national team uses the stadium for occasional games and it has also been used for the 1965, 1970, and 2001 UEFA Champions League finals.

The stadium underwent further renovations for the 1990 World Cup with $60 million being spent, bringing the stadium up to UEFA category four standard. The stadium now has an extra tier added to three sides of the stadium. This entailed the building of 11 concrete towers around the outside of the stadium. Four of these concrete towers were being located at the corners to support a new roof which has distinctive protruding red girders.

There are many classy hotels near San Siro stadium. Some of them are Enterprise Hotel with 126 rooms and within 1.6 miles of the stadium, Hotel Capitol with 66 classic rooms and within 2 miles of the stadium, The Hub within 2.3 miles, Idea Hotel Milano Watttredici within 2.9 miles and with 87 rooms and many more.

The Biblioteca Ambrosiana is a historic library in Milan, Italy, that even keeps the Ambrosian art gallery within its premises. The library was founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo as named after the Ambrose, the patron saint of Milan. The agent of the Cardinal Federico even reached at the regions far away into the Western Europe as even Greece and Syria as looking after the books and manuscripts.

Some major acquisitions for the libraries there were the manuscripts of the Benedictine monastery of Bobbio (1606) and the library of the Paduan Vincenzo Pinelli, where about 800 manuscripts that were kept in 70 cases were distributed around to Milan and there they included the famous Iliad, the Ilia Picta. It was Cardinal Borromeo’s stay in Rome, during he dreamt and thought about developing this library in Milan. At the time his primary objective was to open this library for scholars as it would works as a bulwark of Catholic scholarship in the service of the Counter-Reformation against the treatises issuing from Protestant presses. I order to keep around those 15,000 manuscripts and twice the books as the number of manuscripts the construction for the library as started from the 1603 under designs and direction of Lelio Buzzi and Francesco Maria Richini. When it opened to the masses in year 1609 and on the date 8th December it was the second pubic library after the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

The uniqueness of the library was that it evolved the method of books as being arranged in cases along the walls instead of kept or packed on the reading tables. A medieval practice is still seen till toady in the Laurentian Library of Florence. There a printing press was too added to the library and there a school was formed for teaching in the classical languages. There after the regular acquisition was held there as added by bequests, required enlargement of the space as well. Borromeo planned an academy that became operational since 1611-18 to keep the Cardinal paintings and drawings as it the nucleus and core of the Pinacoteca. Cardinal Borromeo even donated his personal collections of paintings and drawings to the library, as well. After some time the death of cardinal, the library acquired about twelve manuscripts of Leonardo da Vinci, including the Codex Atlanticus. The library now keeps about 12,000 drawings by European artists, as from the 14th through the 19th centuries, as arousing from a wide range of patrons and artists, academicians, collectors, art dealers, and architects. The building was badly damages around in the World War II, with the loss of the archives of opera libretti of La Scala, but further restored in 1952 and further restored in 1990–97.
