The Arcaded Vittorio Emanuele II

Posted by admin in Attractions, General, Guide, Milan Tour, Tips | Leave a comment

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a roof covered double arcade consisted of two glass-vaulted arcades at right angles intersecting in an octagon, is mostly visible from the northern side of the Piazza del Duomo in Milan, and joins it to the Piazza della Scala. Named after Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of united Italy, it was actually designed in 1861 and was constructed by Giuseppe Mengoni as between 1865 and 1877.

There entire street thus is covered with an arching glass and cast iron roof, a design much popular for arcades in nineteenth-century arcades, like as the Burlington Arcade, London. It was the prototype for much larger glazed shopping arcades, that started at the   Saint-Hubert Gallery in Brussels in 1847, the Passazh in St Petersburg in 1848 and the Galleria Umberto I in Naples as started in 1890 and finally the, Budapest Galleria. It central octagonal space, there is placed up with a glass dome. The Milanese Galleria was quite large then its predecessors and was a very important step for moving towards the rather modern glazed and enclosed shopping mall, of which it was the direct ancestor. It had inspired, therefore the use of the term galleria for many other shopping arcades and malls. The use of the iron structure here in buildings even inspired the Eiffel Tower, as well in Paris.

The Galleria there joins two of the most renowned Milan’s landmarks, The Duomo and the Teatro Alla Scala, however, the Galleria itself is a famous landmark of its own prestige and caliber. The Galleria many a times is named as the il salotto di Milano, or Milan’s drawing room, as occurring to many a good number of shops and importance as a common Milanese meeting and dinning place. About more than 130 years after its inauguration, the four-story arcade involves the very elegant shops selling every product of daily use including from haute couture and jewelry to books and paintings, as well as restaurants, cafés, and bars. It is straight connected to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and is Milan’s ultra-luxurious Town House Galleria hotel, and offers the city’s most luxurious rooms and facilities. The Galleria as well is known for the native place for some of the oldest shops and restaurants in Milan, like as the historic Biffi Caffè, as established in 1867 by Pastry Chef to His Majesty Paolo Biffi and was the first Milanese café that installed there electric lighting. Presently, the Galleria is the site for various luxury goods’ shops as including Prada, Massimo Dutti, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, as well as fast food outlets like as McDonald’s.

Posted by admin in Attractions, General, Guide, Milan Tour, Tips | Leave a comment

La Scala is a world famous and very popular opera house in Milan, Italy. The theatre was started on August 3, 1778 and initially was named as the New Royal-Ducal Theatre at La Scala.  The reputation of the opera house can be understood from the fact that during its history of about 200 years, not only the finest singers from Italy as well as from other nations have appeared in performances in La Scala. Even today the theater has reputation as one of the leading and famous opera and ballet theaters in the world and it is the home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet and La Scala Theatre Orchestra.  The theatre also has an associate school name that is known to be the La Scala Theatre Academy that provides the professional training in music, dance, stage craft and stage management.

The music and dance activities in La Scala begin on 7th December, the Saint Ambrose’s Day, the feast day of Milan’s patron saint. All performances there should must end before the midnight and even operas start earlier in the evening if there any need is aroused to be or occur. The Museo Teatrale alla Scala is accessible from the theatre’s foyer and there contains a part of the house having an extraordinary collection of paintings, drafts, statues, costumes, and other documents as related to opera and La Scala’s history. La Scala also organized the Accademia d’Arti e Mestieri dello Spettacolo (Academy for the Performing Arts). By it, it serves the objective of teaching new generation of young musicians, technical staff, and dancers.

At the site of La Scala, there was a theatre, the Teatro Regio Ducal that was destroyed in a fire. The new theatre was constructed on the earlier location of the church of Santa Maria della Scala, from which it got its name. The church was deconsecrated and demolished, and in around the span of two years the theatre was completed by Pietro Marliani, Pietro Nosetti and Antonio and Giuseppe Fe. In the start theater had around 3,000 seats as organized into  678 pit-stalls, arranged in six tiers of boxes above which is the ‘loggione’ or two galleries. Its stage is one of the largest in Italy measuring (16.15m d x 20.4m w x 26m h).

The original structure was restarted in 1907, when it was presented with its current shape of about 2,800 seats. In 1943, during WWII, La Scala too was badly damaged in bombing. It further reconstructed and reopened on 11 May 1946, with a memorable concert conducted by Arturo Toscanini. Further once again, the theater had gone a major renovation from early 2002 to late 2004. The theatre reopens on 7 December 2004 with a production conducted by Riccardo Muti of Salieri’s Europa riconosciuta.
